Mark Stolaroff is an independent producer and the founder of No Budget Film School, a series of classes specifically designed for the no-budget filmmaker. His most recent project, the self-financed low-budget feature film Pig written and directed by Henry Barrial, recently played a string of festivals–13 in only six weeks. He personally attended eight of those festivals in four weeks. Mark graciously agreed to take some photos and write up articles about this series of film festivals for The Weird Review. Here is his report on the Charlotte International Film Festival. For more about Mark check out the links at the end of his article.
Next stop on my festival tour was another Southern festival, though one still going through growing pains compared to the well-established Atlanta Film Festival.
The 6th edition of the Charlotte International Film Festival took place in the beautiful new theater complex the Epicenter, located in the bustling heart of this city’s modern downtown area. The only drawback of playing here is the festival had to screen on Mondays and Tuesdays in order to get the theater at an affordable price, (something like free, as I understand it.)
In order to screen the ambitious number of films on tap, the organizers had to spread the festival out over most of the month of March, which makes it harder to have a cohesive festival. Still, for a small and not-yet well-funded festival, these are the kinds of difficult choices that must be made, and to the festival’s credit, the projection in these high-end theaters was top-notch. Surely, future editions will allow for this space on the weekends and then the festival will really be able to shine.
