Flashbacks and Fleas

When I was a kid, Mom and I used to enjoy spending time and a little bit of money together. We’d go to yard sales, flea markets, and second hand/mission stores and sort through the trash and treasure. The furthest back memory of this had to go back to my fourth or fifth birthday when my brothers and dad were away (a tiger’s baseball game I believe) and I had a few dollars to spend.

If memory serves me right I bought a little bench that had an embroidered or printed cowboy on it.  Its funny when I think about it but some of my oldest, best memories relate to yard sales, second hand stores and mom and I sorting through the treasures.

Mom and I still like to hit the yard sales, flea markets, thrift stores, etc. when I visit her or when she comes to visit at other times of the year.  On Mother’s day weekend we usually hit a second hand shop, mission store or yard sales and then go mushroom hunting for morels (a couple of mom’s favorite things!)

Earlier this summer I visited Flashback, one of my favorite such secondhand shops in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Flashback is one of those shops that you can go to looking for a specific item and totally fail but still walk out with half a dozen other things.

They are great for outfitting yourself with a retro look, for a photo shoot,  or for picking up a halloween costume.

There are shelves, closets, cabinets, and clothes racks with treasures galore (for you to explore, items to adore, you’ll leave wanting more, and…  why am I rhyming? For more pics from Flashback, check the mini photo gallery at the end of this article.  In the meantime, if you love flea markets, keep reading!)

Also this summer I covered a huge flea market in Wheaton (Chicago area) Illinois. This particular flea market isn’t just any flea market but rather an amazing flea market that the Travel Channel ranks as #5 of the World’s Best Flea Markets. Which is to say, it is huge and awesome. Its where I met some amazing Soul musicians and interviewed a couple of them as well as a few other fun celebrities back in August.

Last night Jim Decker, one of the organizers of Wheaton’s All Night Flea Market, was bugging me and telling me I HAVE to get down there this weekend as they will have a number of celebrities there and he wants me to do some interviewing (as I think about it, the funny thing is he has been in a few movies and such.  Maybe I should drag him in front of the camera for an interview?) so I intend to be there Saturday for their Haunted Flea Market (and you should too!)

For those of us who remember watching the original Planet of the Apes and Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Linda Harrison who played Nova, Charlton Heston’s Mate, will be there and so will Don Pedro Colley who was in Beneath the Planet of the Apes and many other TV shows and movies. For the younger crowd Larissa Gomes, who was in Resident Evil 2: Apocalypse, Saw IV, and Saw 3D as well as a number of other shows and movies, will be there.

They will also have a masquerade ball and bands playing for an exciting Halloween weekend!

So grab a costume and come on down for the Halloween Flea Market in Wheaton, Illinois!
