The Geekenheim made its world premiere this Fall at the New York Comic Convention where they celebrated their grand opening at their first public art exhibit with body painting beauties. The Geekenheim is the brain child of James Kenna, aka Darth Beats. The premiere displayed wonderfully geeky Sci Fi and comic related artwork that may just be perfect for your office or den. Check it out!
John Collins (JC): Thanks for agreeing to do an interview with me! I heard about your Geek worthy art gallery and it is cool stuff! I love the name! Tell me a bit about your background and what led up to your path into geek art?
James Kenna (Jk): Well my back ground tends to be in night clubs so all the art avenue is relatively new to me. I’ve always been a hardcore geek and I was actually looking for a new print to fill the empty space over my couch. I perused comic stores and web stores to no avail, but then I came across this Andy Warhol piece at a friends place and I said, “this could be dope if…” So I commissioned an artist friend to fashion the piece and it came out amazing. Somewhere in there I said I can’t be the only person who is more in to quality art with a bit of geek nostalgia. And the rest is history as they say.
(JC): Tell me about the Geekenheim… What is it? Is it only online and at events like the New York Comic Con, or is it also brick and mortar?
(Jk): Currently we are only online, I actually put everything together in about a month. Our website went live about 3 days before NYCC. I hope to try and do more conventions and look into doing gallery shows but like I said, this is all still very new to me.
(JC): Where do you plan to go from here?
(Jk): Well aside from Geekenheim, I just finished writing a graphic novel and now I’m working on my second. I’m shopping around for artists so if you know anyone…
(JC): In addition to examiner.com, I write for my site The Weird Review, can you tell my readers and your fans something weird and wonderful about yourself that your folks might not know about?
(Jk): Well I’m not sure what constitutes weird these days but I’ll give you a few and you can take your pick! I have a dj company where I dj under the moniker Darth Beats, Geekenheim will be my 4th business, I’m hoping this will be the big one; At first glance people never realize how deep my geek goes due to the industry I work in (night clubs), but I’ve been playing Dungeons & Dragons since 2nd ed. and I read roughly 50-60 sci fi/fantasy novels a years.; I started an art company but I know little to nothing about art, I’m just a man who knows what he likes and thats what I carry!
(JC): Well, I have to say I beat you on the D & D by a few years but it will do I suppose. Thanks again for the interview James!
