Saturday evening at the Doubletree Hotel in Dearborn, Michigan 68 fans of the multimedia experience, “Homestuck” gathered to dine, dance, and cosplay the creative characters from the online comic Homestuck.
For $33 the catered dinner included Chicken Marsalis, pasta, mashed potatoes, veggies, and topped off with a cheesecake chaser.
Most of the attendees were costumed as one of their favorite Homestuck characters.
For those unfamiliar with “Homestuck” it is the creative work of writer/artist, Andrew Hussie. While most of the fans call it an online web comic done in Flash, they will go on to tell you that it has music, games, and animations/video embedded into the thousands of pages of online content, so to call it a mere web comic is a bit deceiving and certainly doesn’t do justice to what is really a multimedia, online experience.
The story starts with the end of the world as we know it for all but four video gamers who manage to successfully play their way out of the apocalypse. From there it becomes rather convoluted as the players seek to beat the unbeatable game. They run into other players that have played it before as well as future versions of themselves to add confusion to the multimedia mix.
At the Dancestuck event this weekend the attendees played some of their favorite characters including trolls, humans, and others with the organizer of the even, Lance Sabbag of Blue Dragon Media, cosplaying Andrew Hussie, himself!
Some visiting soldiers from the Army Reserves stopped by and were invited in to join the fun.
Other notables in attendance included the Youma Con chairman, Morgan Kollin, and Con staff from Shuto Con (and others) such as William Burgess and Michelle White.
The dance ended and cleared out around 2 a.m. but for those who had stayed at the hotel, the fun restarted over at 10 a.m. for breakfast and a soak in the hot tub at 11:30 a.m. before clearing out of the hotel.
