This weekend from Chicago to Detroit and from Toronto down to Cincinatti, Midwest Steampunk fans will be enjoying a heavy dose of spring steam.
The Lantern City crew is hitting C2E2 (Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo) in Chicago with Lantern City Co-Creators/Executive Producers Bruce Boxleitner and Trevor Crafts leading the way. The beautiful Mira Furlan will also grace the scene. Rumor has it that the writer, Matthew Daley, will also be present at the con.
In Cincinatti the Steampunk Empire Symposium will be invading the Crowne Plaza North. One of the highlights of a steampunk convention is the music and entertainers. Over the weekend there will be performances by Travis Fessler and the Pickled Brothers Circus, AUTOMATON, Chakras, Drunk and Sailor, The Extraordinary Contraptions, Ford Theatre Reunion, Les Odalisques, Qiet, and last but by no means least, the awesome Frenchy and the Punk!
In addition to the wonderful performers there will be games, panels, lords and ladies in their finery, craftsmen and vendors and a wide array of other anachronistic activities.
Over in Detroit at the Phoenix Cafe in Hazel Park, Michigan, Detroit steampunk fans who can’t make it to Cincinatti can still gather Saturday night at 9 p.m. for some swing dancing with the Italian band Swingrowers. Sunday to further console one another for having to miss the Steampunk Empire Symposium, more Detroiters will steam over to the Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti, Michigan for the Steampunk Symposium Pity Party where those who couldn’t make it will cry in their beers and, should some return from Cincinatti early, they may hear tales of what they missed.
In Toronto, Ontario, the Toronto Steampunk Society will be gathering at High Park on Sunday for a stroll through the park and photo opportunities among the blooming Japanese cherry trees.
So, while you can only catch Bruce’s Spring Steam at C2E2, this weekend there will be steampunk all over the Midwest. The difficulty will be choosing which way to go.
