From October 31 to Novenber 3rd, 2013 Youmacon, the largest Anime convention in Michigan was held in the GM Renaissance Center and in the Cobo Center in Detroit.  San Diego’s band, Steam Powered Giraffe, filled the main auditorium  at the convention.  The fans came from all around to attend the Steam Powered Giraffe concert and swamped the band members for autographs and photos.

Now, just over a month later, Off the Beaten Path Books (33314 Grand River Ave., Farmington, Michigan – Phone (248) 987-6055) is presenting a two night concert series with Steam Powered Giraffe at the Marquis Theatre in Northville, MI.  Some find this a gutsy move for a brick and mortar, paper and ink book store in the digital age.  Word from the organizers suggest the gamble is paying off with the Friday December 13 (from 8 to 11 p.m.) and Saturday December 14 (from 8 to 11 p.m.) concerts both sold out!

Update as of 10:15 a.m. 12/13/2013 according to a post from Youmacon Convention Chairman, Morgan Kollin, on the Youmacon Facebook page, “Fans of Steam Powered Giraffe? A few VIP tickets and a several general admission tickets have freed up for today and tomorrow’s concert. If you’re free, stop on by Off the Beaten Path Books for tickets, and join us for a special Bizarre Bazaar in Saturday in downtown Farmington starting at 10am. Hope to see you there.” so give them a call at (248) 987-6055 if you are looking for tickets!

If you are unfamiliar with Steam Powered Giraffe, check out one of their fan favorites, “Honeybee” on Youtube, but be forewarned that this has been the gateway song for Steam Powered Addiction among many of their fans.

Steam Powered Giraffe band members perform as humans and steampunk (Victorian era Science Fiction) robots.  The robots are Hatchworth played by Sam Luke, The Spine played by David Michael Bennett, Rabbit played by Christopher “Bunny” Bennett, and GG the baby giraffe robot, also played by Christopher “Bunny” Bennett.  In addition to the robots there are two humans, the drummer extraordinaire Matt Smith and the amazingly talented, One Man Band of Michael Reed!

Periodically during the concerts the robots will need an emergency adjustment or two to keep them functioning properly.  Fortunately during such incidents there are the Walter Girls.  These two lovely ladies, Paige and Carolina, come out to apply the necessary tweaks to get the automatons back in action.

While some might stop there, there is another Steam Powered Giraffe member who is well worth mentioning.  Steve Negrete is the band’s Master of Music Manipulation and Sensei of Sound (aka the sound engineer) and a heartthrob for all the ladies.  You can also catch him and the adventures of little Steve (a doll that accompanies the band) on the official Steam Powered Giraffe Youtube Channel.

If you can’t make it to Off the Beaten Path’s Yulemas concerts this weekend you can still catch the Detroit Steampunk Collective’s Yulemas celebration and then head to the coast for Her Royal Majesty’s Steampunk Symposium in Long Beach, California on the Queen Mary where Steam Powered Giraffe will be performing on Friday January 10, 2014.
