The Joe Cain Day Parade in Mobile, Alabama

During the Civil War Mardi Gras ceased to be celebrated in Mobile, Alabama. After the Civil War when the Union forces were occupying Mobile, Alabama, Joe Cain organized Mobile Citizens to resume the Mardi Gras celebration. On the Sunday before Mardi Gras the people of Mobile celebrate Joe Cain Day in his honor. During the parade there will be women dressed in black who are the Mystic Society, “The Merry Widows of Joe Cain.” Another Mystic Society, “The Mistresses of Joe Cain”, will be seen parading today dressed in Scarlet.
